I read Lone Eagle by Danielle Steel for at least 90 minutes. Kate returned to school and she and Joe continued to write to each other. Kate's day was going just fine until she received a phone call from her father. She was very worried because Clarke never called Kate at school. She was worried when she took the call. She thought something had happened to her mother. Kate was right to be worried. Clarke was calling her to tell her that Joe was missing in action. His plane had been shot down over Germany and he had not been found.
Of course, Kate was worried about Joe but school and life had to go on. In May, Kate graduated with her parents and Andy attending. Kate wasn't sure what to do with her summer so she went to work for the Red Cross again that summer. It had been 21 months since Joe was reported MIA when he was found. He was found in a German war camp. Kate worked for the Red Cross so she was able to meet the ship that Joe was on. He was weak and had broken legs but he was still alive. Joe spent two months in the hospital recovering and then he went to stay with Kate's parents.
After his recovery, Joe was honorably discharged from the service and was ready to go on with his life. Clarke was curious if his futute involved Kate. Clarke wanted Joe and Kate to get engaged but Joe was not ready for that yet. He was starting a job in New Jersey and knew he wouldn't have time for Kate right now. He could have her in his life but he was not ready to be married. Kate wanted to be close to Joe and she would visit him often in New Jersey. They didn't like this arrangement so while everyone thought Kate was living in a hotel, she was really living with Joe. Joe had told Kate about the talk he and Clarke had had about Kate. Clarke had told Joe he was going to lose Kate if he didn't marry her. Kate let Joe know that there was no chance of that happening. She loved him.
